This Week’s Show
This week’s podcast will be on what I call ‘Windows Enablers’. These are the assorted emulators and applications that allow users to run Windows applications in Linux.
While it’s important to recognize that the idea of moving to Linux is just that: moving to Linux, some consideration has to be given to the few users who are in a situation where they absolutely, positively need to run a Windows application of some sort.
All the big bases are covered in Linux: Internet software, office applications, PIM stuff, audio and graphic apps, it’s all there. Sadly, though, there are many manufacturers out there who develop software for their hardware gadgets and only develop that software for Windows. I have (well, not yet…it’s in the mail) a Logitech Digital IO pen that only has a Windows client; Timex used to (or still does) offer the Datalink watch with only a Windows client, and the list is a heck of a lot longer than that.
While Wine is a fine, free, Windows emulator - it isn’t able to run all Windows programs. This week’s show will talk about some of the leading Windows Enablers out there for those of us who absolutely, positively, have to run a Windows app.
