The GNU/Linux User Show #10

The GNU/Linux User Show #010 (MP3 -11.6MB - 33min 40sec)
LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

This is the first short show of our new format. If you listened to show number 9 you know that we’re alternating long and short shows. Our schedules are about to get a whole lot busier with the fall approaching so we’re scaling back just a wee bit. To console you though, Kelly Penguin Girl is on the short shows from start to finish.

This week we play with the Document Conversion Wizard in Open Office, talk about the origins of GNU/Linux, and Kelly announces her first contest for a Win4Lin Pro license!

02:34 - Open Office
06:16 - The Document Converter Wizard
08:04 - Star Office
09:34 - NO VBA FOR YOU!
10:48 - Converting document and templates
13:42 - OO Slooooow to start
15:34 - What are the differences between OO and MS Office?
17:29 - How many Penguins?
21:43 - GNU Stuff
22:21 - Cam from BinaryUprising.com
29:09 - Kelly Penguin Gir’s Contest!

GNU Project website.
August TUX Magazine is out.

Kelly Penguin Girl’s Contest

Make a penguin out of something: ascii art, digital art, beer can statues, dress up a Tux doll…whatever you like. Email a picture of it to her at kellypenguingirl@gmail.com by midnight Friday August 12th MST. The one she likes the best will not only net a Win4Lin Pro license, but she’s also going to use it as her logo!

Good luck!

Edit: Aaron Seigo from the KDE project stopped by to correct me on the origins of Open Office. I knew I was gonna boffo it, and I did! Aaron says:

you mentioned that Star Office was created by Sun. it wasn’t. it was created by a german company called Star Division GmbH which, iirc, had been developing it since the 80s. sun bought them sometime after v 5.2..

google for “star division purchased by sun”

Thanks Aaron!

Hi I am the OpenOffice.org Co-Lead for the Spanish project, I haven’t heard your input on OpenOffice.org but I would do so soon and comment back. I just got your website from The Linux Link Tech Show who gave you a shout out. I think what you are doing is great and show empower more users to grasp the use of FLOSS.

    Thanks!

We didn’t really look into OO too deeply, we just took the document converter wizard for a quick spin :)

    Thanks for stopping by!

Oh, and for the rest of us: FLOSS=Free/Libre and Open Source Software.

Excellent. How about a lower resolution version for us modem users? 12 MB is too big for a modem download. Also, this would be a great way to promote open codecs like Vorbis. How about one Ogg Vorbis file along side the MP3 version?

    Hi Lars,

Funny - I’m having almost this same conversation with someone else right now…

I realize the MP3 patent problem and recognize that OGG is the way to go. However, when I’m delivering something like 40GB a month, I just don’t know where to host the OGGs.

    I’m working on it though.

Lower res: I have never considered this. Hmmm….

Show #10 was 12MB and it was a short show. Most shows are aroun 45-60 minutes and sit around 20-25MB. The TPN standard is 22Khz and 48Bps which is about as low as you can go with a talk format and not sound like you’re talking from inside a tin can. Even if I halved the quality (which would really sound totally crappy - it might not even be discernible) you’d still be looking at 10-12MB for a long show.

Tell you what, stay tuned for show #11. I’m going to try a few things from user requests. I’ll attempt to put an OGG version somewhere and I’ll cut a low quality version for you and you can let me know how it sounds.

    Jon
