Hi !
Alien is “known” for years to convert rpm to deb and back.. Bt it’s also know to install badly on system. Because rpm based system have changed a little with the time, just as debian basd system. Alien is not supported by any official team (gnome, kde, ubuntu, redhat or novell, etc…). So you should be very carefully when using Alien. I would avoid it.
The best is to stick with the official repositories (redhat directories or fedora, the main, universe, multiverse for debian). And add the extras directories (as the Penguin Liberation Front (PLF) directory for debian) in the APT or the URPMI or the YAM source list. You will find a lot of rebuilt packages made for the right system ;)
Klik seems to be really insteresting ! It looks like the WebStart by Sun. It could be very handy. However… If you add a Kliked software, will it be available for the whole system, or only for the user ?
Because under linux, the user has no access to the system. Installing an rpm or a deb file, need the root access. I’m surprised as you are that no password is not required :/
So, my opinion is maybe that the program is installed IN the user’s home and not in the / directory…. can you may be tell us more about this ?

Hi Olivier,
Alien is all new to me. I know that it’s been around for a while, but I’ve honestly never heard of it before I needed it to install my RPM based OOo v2.0. The point is irrelevant now, of course, because there are OOo debs all over the place, but at the time I needed it, there wasn’t.
I will say that it worked flawlessly for me in that one instance. I haven’t tried it on anything since.
As for the Klik software, this is my understanding of the ‘multi-user’ issue: each application is a single ‘cmg’ file which is a compressed binary image or some kind. Since it is just a single file, you can decide where you would like to put it. If you put it in a directory accessible to all users, then all users on the system will be able to run it (after ensuring you have set the proper file permissions on the cmg file). If you leave it in your own home directory, then only you will be able to run it. Of course you will likely have to be root to put the file somewhere where everyone can run it. By default, it puts the cmg file on your desktop therefore only the user who downloaded it can run it.

I’ve tried downloading podcast show #23 twice now from different locations and it always stops after about 2 megs, or five minutes into the show. Can you check the mp3 and make sure it is not messed up? Thanks.

Hi Brian,
That’s odd. I just tried it and got the whole thing 100% without a problem. Are you streaming it? If so, you may want to ’save as’ to your local machine and then play it from there.
Anyone else having problems?

Wow, this show is really sweet.
I am just getting started with listening to podcasts, and I really like yours. Always proud to see a fellow canadian do something sweet and fun! I listened to show #23 on the bus to work today (the ride from Gatineau to Ottawa can take some time :P) and I learned alot about Klik, and plan on testing it out on my Slackware 10.2 box tonight :)

Just a little note to other readers/listeners that might have encountered the same thing I did (read slackware users)… If ran from within X, Klik needs Xdialog… but it seems that it can run from console with just plain old dialog :)
