Weehooo! We made it to show #25! Who would have thought that we would have made it this far? We sure didn’t…you guys are crazy to keep encouraging us.
I recorded the OGG on level 4 instead of level 5 this week. It seems a little smaller, but is still quite a bit larger than the MP3. I’m going to record it on level 3 next week unless you guys tell me it sounds crappy.
We were going to revisit Puppy Linux on this show. I thought that since many months had gone by and the fact that many, many people are still commenting on an old Puppy Linux review I did that it would have sufficiently advanced to work on my system. But, alas - that’s not the case and since it’s hard to talk about something that doesn’t work - we’re not going to.
Instead, we take a trip down memory lane and talk about every show since the first one. You likely won’t learn anything about GNU/Linux in this show, but you might have a laugh or two.

Hey I learned something, I should have listen to Linux episode #17 was one that I missed and I went back to listen to it.
Since the forum is now as read only I want to give a suggestion for future podcast.
What about doing stuff with programs, one thing we get usually in the OOo community is doing mail merge in Writer.
Another thing that might be nice is doing nice document design on Scribus which is a nice Quark-like software.

Mail-merge, eh? I like that idea…I can use Roblimo’s Point & Click OOo to learn how to do it and then teach Kelly on the air.

Record the ogg at level 0 or even -1. This is just a voice podcast, so it will sound fine.

Yeah? OK - I’ll try 0. I don’t thik my slider goes into the negatives, although I haven’t looked at it very closely yet.

You can even encode at -2, 32kbps, which is perfect for podcasting.

Audacity doesn’t have a Kbps setting for OGGs that I can find. All I appear to have is a slider. I’ll drop it right down though now that I know I can do so.

I usually encode my podcast using oggenc, this is just for people that want to make the best ogg since it has many options of encoding. I usually create a wav file in audacity and then use lame and oggenc to optimize the encoding.
Audacity might also give you some options on the configuration files vi ~.audacity I am not sure which can be the settings for OGG thought.

I wonder if there is way to encode using speex, I have libspeex but I havent got around to configuring for use with audacity. I will check out on that hydrogenaudio.org forum, sounds like a great reasource. I am already bookmarking it. :D

I’m going to try the OGG setting at zero on Audacity. Concensus around here seems to be that will work.

I also helped someone encode an OGG podcast before using oggenc. You should give it a whirl, it works pretty well.
I don’t think it can handle an MP3, so export a WAV from audacity.

I just re-encoded the show at -1 (on my oggenc, there is no -2) and it still sounded good and is 10.9 MB. The MP3 is 16… now that’s saying something.

Yeah - it sure looks like I was out to lunch to be worried that ‘5′ might be too low :)
