Promoting Non-DRM Music on the Show?
I’d like to promote non DRM’d music more. I buy a lot of stuff from Magnatune and MP3tune.com and generally blog about it when I do. However, Magnatune will let me podcast their music and I’m interested in doing that.
But, at the end of the day, this is a GNU/Linux show and not a pop radio station and I’m aware that I might be the only person out there that wants me to do this. So, the question is, how do you guys feel about me playing a song at the end of the show each week? Is that too much? Is that bringing my own agenda to the show? Or is that cool?

It’s your show, do what you’d like.
Other podcasts I listen to have no problem going off their main topic for a few minutes each show. Radio shows often play music clips. No big deal.
As long as you don’t use up all your time with music, I doubt anyone will mind.

Yeah, I wouldn’t think too many people would mind. I’d play it at the end so that if it’s not a particular listener’s cup of tea then they could just shut off without missing anything.
The reason I’m asking is because one of the comment’s I’ve heard more than once about this show is that we stay on topic more than other shows. I think we tend to drift away a bit, but people have actually taken the time to write that we stay on topic in reviews of the show which makes me think that’s really important to people.
I have another motive as well. Magnatune allows us to share any album we buy with three other people. I always post on my personal blog when I make a purchase from Magantune, but nobody ever takes me up on the offer. Maybe that’s because my taste in music sucks, but likely it’s the audience. I think I would have much better luck giving away the freebie copies with the larger listenership of this show vice my blog. And…the more people listening (hopefully) the more people buying non DRMd music and making the world a better place :)

Funny you should say that, Christopher. I just bought a ‘Gimme Some’ by Nova Express from Magnatune. They’re billed as ‘Punk n Roll’. Kind of a softer punk or a harder rock…whichever you’d like.
Give them a listen, if you like them I can send you the download credentials to get the album.

Come on Dude, I thought you were becoming a pro at this network environment, you disappoint me ;). Combine a perfectly decent melody with my Linux ballads and you have the chemical make up of LINUX RAP!
Now if only we could get a label to pick up and buy this… perhaps as a single?

I think it is a fine idea. It may be a little off topic, but it is in the ballpark.
GNU/Linux users tend to get concerned about DRM, copyright laws, patent legislation, and the DMCA as they get a greater grasp of the culture.
You not only expose people to non DRM music, but good music by artists they may not have heard of.
It is no more off topic than adopting a penguin. ;-)

Hi Pat,
I feel that way. I think that people concerned about freedom tend to care about it in more areas than just their OS. I actually dropped right out of the music scene for about a year because I couldn’t make sense of it anymore. I didn’t know what I way buying, what I was allowed to do with it, or what message I was sending (if any) by purchasing it.
Things are a little clearer for me now and I can see a way to enjoy music without supporting DRM. Therefore, I’m back with a vengeance :)
But hey…maybe it’s just music and I’m reading way too much into it. I do that sometimes. And..weell..yup..I can’t argue the penguin angle. You got me there :)

What I meant was that as a good network guy (you seen to be doing a s$%t load over at b5), you should know the value of plugging your own network (i.e. in this case TPN).

Kelly picked a name that made perfect sense. I think I posted something to that effect earlier.
An Oreo is black and white. A “normal” penguin is black and white.
The Little Penguin is black, white, and blue. A Blue Oreo would be black, white and blue. Thus, Bloreo.
It really was quite funny when that name got picked out of the hat. :)
