Linus: Gnome Mentality ‘a Disease’.

What desktop manager does Linus Torvalds think you should use?

Well, he called the Gnome Project’s mentality ‘a disease’ today and urged people to move to KDE.

That’s gotta hurt…

Here’s the Usenet posting link.

I hope the community puts his statements into perspective.

Linus is one man with one opinion. True, his opinion carries more weight and gets alot more traction. If I had posted something like that, I may have been modded, flamed, or ignored.

Stallman, Perrens, Linus, and others sometimes say things I disagree with, but I still respect them.

If you prefer GNOME, use it. Same goes for IceWM, Enlightenment, and countless others.

I have not touched GNOME in about two years so it is hard for me to say if I agree or disagree with him.

Will this hurt GNOME adoption? I honestly do not know. I think those who currently use GNOME are likely to stay with GNOME. There could be less adoption by newbies or the curious.

In many forums I hear more about Kubuntu than Ubuntu, is this an indicator that Linus is not the only one? I do not know. I do hope there is not a huge backlash in the community over this.

Yeah…sheesh…what a storm this is causing. If you click on the link in the posting there’s a long list of replies. Some good, some bad, some indifferent.

I agree with you that current users are likely to stay with what they’ve chosen. If this statement affects anyone, it will likely be the new users or other people that are looking for recommendations on which desktop manager ‘is better’.

Gnome will survive, though. The GNU Project is nothing if not tougher than nails.

  3. Pat Green Says:

Agreed on GNOME’s survival and GNU being tough. ;-)

I dislike infighting in the community.

IMHO, GNOME and KDE feed off each other. Part of the reason they are both innovating so quickly is because they are always seeing what the other is doing. I admit to liking KDE and IceWM best. I do not think KDE would be as good as it is if GNOME was not around. The browser wars in the 90’s showed us what happens to innovation when there is no real competitor.

  4. Jon Says:

Abolsutely true. Competition is good for us users in most cases :)

Well, regardless of how many suck-ups there are to Linus, he….obviously knowing nothing about business, should really learn to keep his mouth shut, and choose his words more wisely.

GNOME, is by far more of a Corporate desktop than KDE ever will be. Developers, hackers, creators (etc.) of the open source world always have a difficult time understanding what CIOs and the corporate market want. (hence, M$ still being the dominant) Simple, “just works” mentality is what will get Linux on the corporate desktop….not the ability to change the width of a toolbar to .4 pixels instead of .5 pixels.

GNOME lover, KDE love….who cares lover. I’m a Linux lover, and the comments made by our beloved “founder” does NOTHING to help the community. I’m tired of being forced to use M$ products at work, stop the nonsense of making the desktop “look pretty” and make the damn thing work with available software, devices, etc.

  6. Jon Says:

    Hi Daniel,

I generally agree with you. If GNU/Linux adoption is a concern, then we have to stop infighting and get on with the business of…well…business.

MS has the advantage of being in business from day one. The GNU/Linux community doesn’t have its roots in business and it shows. Great progress is being made, though, so hopefully we’ll see adoption increase more and more.

Thanks for the comment - good insight.
