The GNU/Linux User Show #026 (OGG 26MB - 53min)

MP3: LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE
OGG: LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

This week’s show was supposed to be about how to Mail Merge in OpenOffice.org 2.0, but due to technical difficulties, that’s going to have to wait until next week. Instead, this week I talk about Linspire since I’ve been playing with it recently.

And look - real minutes!

Minutes:

00:30 - Show Intro - not Mail Merge with OOo 2 as promised.

01:45 - I’m now using Linspire

04:30 - I’m running a laptop and therefore whatever works on a desktop isn’t relevant in most cases.

05:30 - My package problems with Kubuntu

08:30 - My basic requirements to carry on with testing a distro

09:50 - Justin has suspend working on Ubuntu

11:33 - Linspire has given me no grief, but the CNR delay is kind of annoying

12:30 - The Click n’ Run (CNR) Warehouse. It’s not a piece of crap

15:00 - I found all the apps I looked for in the CNR. Even the weird ones

19:30 - The Linspire community

23:00 - Some of the CNR package descriptions show a lack of understanding about what the package is

25:30 - Not everyone likes the CNR

26:40 - Is Linspire evil or good?

29:00 - Primer on Free Software

31:45 - RMS himself encourages us to sell free software and to charge as much as we wish or can for it

32:05 - RMS told me, personally, on show #13, to download a GNU/Linux distro named UTUTO and sell copies of it.

33:00 - That’s not to say that RMS likes Linspire in any way. I think it’s safe to say that he’s disgusted with it

33:54 - Something about Linspire still sticks in my craw

34:40 - Is Linspire good?

35:20 - It’s all about Mass Marketing ™. People have to be able to buy GNU/Linux pre-installed

37:30 - Stores are not going to shelve free stuff. They need to be able to sell it

38:20 - Consumers want to pay for software. It gives them some weird sense of confidence in it

42:55 - Kelly Penguin Girl names the penguin! You are not going to believe this…

47:30 - Alan Clements’ email

50:39 - Kelly thanks everyone for the birthday wishes!

51:50 - Wrapup

NOTE: Yes, I know the LGPL doesn’t stand for “Lesser GNU Public License”, it’s the GNU Lesser General Public License. Slip of the tongue…

OGG: LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE [2]

This week's show was supposed to be about how to Mail Merge in OpenOffice.org 2.0, but due to technical difficulties, that's going to have to wait until next week. Instead, this week I talk about Linspire [3] since I've been playing with it recently.

And look - real minutes!

Minutes:

00:30 - Show Intro - not Mail Merge with OOo 2 as promised.

	01:45 - I'm now using Linspire [3]

04:30 - I'm running a laptop and therefore whatever works on a desktop isn't relevant in most cases.
05:30 - My package problems with Kubuntu
08:30 - My basic requirements to carry on with testing a distro
09:50 - Justin has suspend working on Ubuntu
11:33 - Linspire has given me no grief, but the CNR delay is kind of annoying
12:30 - The Click n' Run (CNR) Warehouse. It's not a piece of crap
15:00 - I found all the apps I looked for in the CNR. Even the weird ones
	19:30 - The Linspire community [5]
23:00 - Some of the CNR package descriptions show a lack of understanding about what the package is
25:30 - Not everyone likes the CNR
26:40 - Is Linspire evil or good?
29:00 - Primer on Free Software
31:45 - RMS himself encourages us to sell free software and to charge as much as we wish or can for it [6]
32:05 - RMS told me, personally, on show #13 [7], to download a GNU/Linux distro named UTUTO [8] and sell copies of it.
33:00 - That's not to say that RMS likes Linspire in any way. I think it's safe to say that he's disgusted with it
33:54 - Something about Linspire still sticks in my craw
	34:40 - Is Linspire good?
35:20 - It's all about Mass Marketing (tm).
You are not going to believe this...
	47:30 - Alan Clements' email
50:39 - Kelly thanks everyone for the birthday wishes!
	51:50 - Wrapup

NOTE: Yes, I know the LGPL doesn't stand for "Lesser GNU Public License", it's the GNU Lesser General Public License. Slip of the tongue...

I recorded the OGG on level 4 instead of level 5 this week. It seems a little smaller, but is still quite a bit larger than the MP3. I’m going to record it on level 3 next week unless you guys tell me it sounds crappy.

We were going to revisit Puppy Linux on this show. I thought that since many months had gone by and the fact that many, many people are still commenting on an old Puppy Linux review I did that it would have sufficiently advanced to work on my system. But, alas - that’s not the case and since it’s hard to talk about something that doesn’t work - we’re not going to.

Instead, we take a trip down memory lane and talk about every show since the first one. You likely won’t learn anything about GNU/Linux in this show, but you might have a laugh or two.

Enjoy!

This week we talk about how to use pubic key cryptography to encrypt and/or sign your email messages and other files. Jarrod Major from the Calgary Linux Users Group come on the show to explain to us all how it’s done using the GNU Privay Guard (GPG). I don’t want to take any thunder from the show, but suffice it to say that public-key cryptography gave security and protection to the common user. Prior to its development, crypto was only available to governments and us peons had little recourse to protect our privacy. No more!

There’s a lot of command-liners thrown around during this episode which are a little too detailed to remember, so here’s a quicklist of the basic ones we used:

gpg –help: used to get a quick list of gpg commands

gpg –gen-key: used to generate a public/private key pair

gpg –edit-key < key id >: used to enter key editing mode to configure a specific key if required

gpg –send-key < key id >: used to send your public key off to a public key server so people can find it

gpg –recv-key < key id >: used to grab someone else’s public key from a key server

gpg –list-keys: used to list the keys you have on your keyring

gpg –output doc.gpg –encrypt reciepent < key id > doc: used to encrypt doc to doc.gpg using < key id>’s public key

gpg –output doc –decrypt –doc.gpg: used to decrypt doc.gpg using your own private key from the doc sourcefile

37:08 - NBA Show promo

38:16 - Jarrod and GPG

62:37 - My parting thoughts

I had to take the bit about key editing out of the show. It’s valuable stuff, but the show was just running too long. Here’s a little blurb about key editing mode:

There are many wonderful and dangerous things you can do in key editing mode but in reality, you probably will only ever have to go in there to perform on task: Assign a level of trust to another person’s key.

To enter key editing mode, type:

gpg –edit-keys < key-id of the key you want to edit >

While in key-editing mode, feel free to type help to get a list of commands that can be applied to the key you’ve chosen. The command to assign a level of trust to a key is:

trust

You will then be prompted for a number corresponding to the level of trust you wish to assign to that key:

1 = Don’t know
2 = I do NOT trust
3 = I trust marginally
4 = I trust fully
s = please show me more information
m = back to the main menu

Make your selection and:

quit

Please, for the love of all that is holy, use the help command before messing with your keys!

I’m going to combine a few of the smaller topics since they kind of go together. I’m going to start with wifi in GNU/Linux (which will mostly surround the use of ndiswrapper), but it’s pretty hard to set up your wifi without using the terminal window and the equivalents of DOS/Windows ipconfig, and GNU/Linux’s own ifconfig, iwconfig, ifup, dhclient….etc.

I’m going to do most of this on the command line because I don’t want to get distro-specific. All the GUI applications do is act as a front end for these tools anyhow, so as long as you can use them then you’ll be able to use your distro’s GUI to deal with your wifi card.

So, that’s kind of the three topics that I’m going to mash into one show. Now…what to get Kelly Penguin Girl to do…

I'm going to combine a few of the smaller topics since they kind of go together. I'm going to start with wifi in GNU/Linux (which will mostly surround the use of ndiswrapper), but it's pretty hard to set up your wifi without using the terminal window and the equivalents of DOS/Windows ipconfig, and GNU/Linux's own ifconfig, iwconfig, ifup, dhclient....etc.

So, that's kind of the three topics that I'm going to mash into one show. Now...what to get Kelly Penguin Girl to do...

Since there have been some requests on the forums for information on how to do this, I thought I would record myself doing it. It wasn’t nearly as easy I thought, and there’s some good wifi information at the end.
